How Spravato Works

Spravato is a form of esketamine, a derivative of ketamine, that acts quickly to rebalance brain chemicals involved in mood regulation. It’s believed to help form new neural connections, improving communication between brain cells. Because of this unique mechanism, patients may notice relief within hours or days — much faster than typical antidepressants, which often take weeks to become effective.

Treatment involves using a nasal spray in the office, followed by a short observation period while you rest comfortably under clinical supervision. Most patients continue their oral antidepressant alongside Spravato for the best results.

Who is a good candidate for Spravato?

Spravato is approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression — meaning you’ve tried at least two different antidepressants without adequate improvement — or for those experiencing depressive symptoms with suicidal thoughts or actions.

How soon will I feel results?

Some patients report improvement within the first few sessions, sometimes even within 24 hours. However, response times vary, and your provider will help track your progress over time.

Is Spravato the same as ketamine?

Spravato contains esketamine, a purified form of ketamine. While related, Spravato is FDA-approved, precisely dosed, and administered in a medical setting with professional supervision.

What are the common side effects?

Possible side effects include dizziness, nausea, fatigue, or mild dissociation. These effects are temporary and closely monitored during each visit.

Will my insurance cover Spravato?

Many insurance plans now cover Spravato for eligible patients. Our team can help you verify benefits and assist with any required authorizations or documentation.

How is Spravato different from traditional antidepressants?

Traditional antidepressants primarily affect serotonin and take weeks to work. Spravato acts on glutamate — a different neurotransmitter — and may begin providing relief much faster, particularly for patients who haven’t responded to other medications.
